Atlanta Airport Launches Compostable Foodservice Ware Packet

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA) sends more than 19,000 tons of waste to Georgia landfills each year. Food scraps are the single largest component of HJAIA waste, making up about one-third of this tonnage. HJAIA has a goal to divert 50% of its waste from landfill disposal by 2015. Composting food waste is essential to reach this goal, and switching to compostable food packaging will enable successful food residuals recovery. Continue reading

Public Power Leads Charge for Plug-in Hybrids

Last week, a dozen cities, over 100 public power utilities, businesses and a host of national policy groups kicked off a nationwide campaign to urge automakers to accelerate development of plug-in hybrid vehicles. The “Plug-In Partners” campaign is hoping to demonstrate a large market potential so that automakers will start producing plug-in vehicles.

Seven NE States Agree to Global Warming Pollution Caps

Seven northeastern states have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement a Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The MOU outlines the program to cap greenhouse gas emissions through 2014 and reduce emissions by 10 percent by 2019, including the framework for a Model Rule to be released in draft form in 90 days.

Update: California PUC Approves Solar Initiative

Update: New Mexico Regulators Promote On-Site Solar Projects

The New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission (PRC) has ordered the state’s largest utility, PNM, to pay 13 cents/kWh for the “green attributes” of interconnected solar photovoltaic systems under 10 kW. The program becomes effective as of March 2006 and has funding available for about 1.2 MW worth of solar projects over the life of the program. Continue reading

Report: Small Scale Energy Development in the U.K. Could Be Substantial

LA Municipal Utility Will Ask Customers To Support Accelerated Renewable Energy Commitments

The Board of Water and Power Commissioners for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) wants the municipal utility to meet their renewable portfolio standard (RPS) seven years earlier than a previous goal required. LADWP will start meeting directly with neighborhood councils, homeowners, businesses and other stakeholders to discuss the plan.

Community Based Energy Development Moving Ahead in Minnesota

A Community Based Energy Development (C-BED) organization has been formed to help landowners and/or investors make connections with each other. C-BED tariffs have been filed for approval by a handful of Minnesota utilities. And the Governor’s office has pledged that at least 800 MW of C-BED wind energy projects will be operational by 2010.

California PUC Offers 3,000 MW Solar Plan

The California Public Utilities Commission released details of a $3.2-billion plan to generate 3,000 MWs of solar power in the state over the next 11 years. The initiative would cost the average residential customer about $7.00 per year. Incentives would be decreased from about $400 million in 2006 to just over $100 million in 2016.

Iowa Municipal Utility Votes for 20 Percent Renewable Energy Standard

In late November, the Waverly Light and Power (WLP) Board of Trustees unanimously voted to set a 20 percent renewable energy standard for the municipally-owned utility’s generation portfolio. Currently, the utility has 3.1 percent renewable generation and the new goal would raise that to 20 percent by 2020.
