Distribution of Deposits by Size and Type of Financial Institution, 1995 – 2010

In 1995, giant banks (those with over $100 million in assets in 2010 dollars) held only a small sliver of U.S. deposits.  Today, they control 44 percent of the market, while small and mid-sized banks and credit unions have seen their share of deposits shrink.
