Waste to Wealth Internships (DC Office)

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance seeks qualified college and university students or graduates for summer and academic year internships to work on its Waste to Wealth Program.  Course credit may be available with approval from an academic department.

We are seeking interns for three projects:

  1. Recycling Means Business:  ILSR is seeking one intern to identify recycling and reuse companies that are interested in replicating their facilities in other cities.
  2. Composting Makes $en$e: We are looking for one or more interns document model composting activities and policies around the country, and assist with regional efforts to expand composting and raise awareness of the benefits.
  3. No Styrofoam Campaign:  An intern is needed to research communities restricting the use of polystyrene (aka styrofoam) for foodservice ware, identify model venues going styrofoam-free, document health issues posed by polystyrene use, and create/populate a new web site on Stop Polystyrene Waste (tentative title).  The intern will also provide research and campaign assistance to the Young Activist Club, a youth based group that ILSR co-leads at the Piney Branch Elementary School in Takoma Park, Maryland. The club is working to eliminate the use of polystyrene for school lunch trays and for food service ware in the larger community (www.youngactivistclub.org).

Qualifications:  Graduate or undergraduate students [post junior year (summer) and seniors preferred].  Interest, knowledge, or experience in environmental, economic development issues.

Skills: Strong computer experience (Macintosh environment).  MS Word, spreadsheets, databases.  Website skills and desktop publishing a plus.  Excellent writing and communications skills.  Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Summer interns:  Minimum term 2 months, 20 hours/week.

Academic year interns:  Semester term, minimum 10 hours/week.

Stipends:  Stipends may be available depending on qualifications and time commitment.

Office hours are flexible.

The Institute’s staff are committed, congenial, and hard-working.  Relaxed work environment.  The office is accessible via public transit (Dupont Circle metro – red line).

To apply, email cover letter, resume, and a brief writing sample to bplatt@ilsr.org.
