Internet Sales Tax Fairness

The content that follows was originally published on the Institute for Local Self-Reliance website at http://www.ilsr.org/rule/internet-sales-tax-fairness/

Current federal policy exempts online and mail-order retailers from having to collect state and local sales taxes, giving them a sizable 4 to 9 percent price advantage over local stores. Advocates of a level playing field are calling on Congress to remedy this inequity by passing the Main Street Fairness Act. Meanwhile, New York state is leading the way in using existing state authority to require that large online retailers be subject to the same sales tax requirements as local businesses. Lincoln, the Movie, and The Rest of the Story

The content that follows was originally published on the Institute for Local Self-Reliance website at http://www.ilsr.org/lincoln-movie-rest-story/

Lincoln is a magnificent movie. But as I left the theatre, to echo Paul Harvey, the late radio commentator, I wanted to know “the rest of the story”. The movie begins in January 1865, exactly 2 years after Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring slaves of the Confederate States “thenceforward and forever free. ” As… Continue reading

“Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds.” Bill Fletcher Jr. of the Institute for Policy Studies tells of how he was reminded of that covenant when in the middle of superstorm Sandy he saw a postal van traveling on his street. And he reminded us that… Continue reading
