Minneapolis, Minnesota
May 30-31, 2002
ILSR hosted the first Deconstruction Managers Workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota to provide in-depth, hands-on assistance to deconstruction service providers. On the first day of this two-day event, we toured a local deconstruction project site, operated by The Green Institute, providing an opportunity for participants to see a large, successful service operation "in the flesh," and providing a visual launching pad for later discussions.

Later, deconstruction experts from across the country offered presentations on all aspects of launching and managing a deconstruction service enterprise. At participants' request, a good deal of time was spent on marketing and bidding contracts, and exploring the relationship between deconstruction service and materials resale enterprises. ILSR also offered information on funding sources for individual projects and for training and employment programs.

Each participant received a workshop notebook that included sample documents and forms, as well as information on topic areas including:

  • Marketing tools
  • Bid procedures and bid documents
  • Contracting
  • Tax deduction documentation;
  • Building sub-contractor relationships for a competitive edge
  • Media and community outreach
  • Hazardous materials
  • On-site training
  • Operations efficiencies.

The conference received high praise from participants, and will likely be just the first in a series of such events

Hartford, CT
March 11, 2002
Nearly 100 people participated in the "ReBuilding Communities Through DeConstruction Enterprises" conference. Co-sponsored by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) and the Connecticut Institute of Municipal Studies, Inc. (CIMS), the event was held in the State Capitol Building in Hartford, CT. Participants from 18 states and 47 cities included deconstruction workers and companies, equipment manufacturers, wood brokers and processors, community development organizations, union and housing authority officials, and local and federal officials.

For many, the conference provided a first-glimpse of state-of-the-art deconstruction techniques and technologies, as well as an opportunity to meet with practitioners to better understand the economics and benefits of deconstruction, and its impact on low-income communities and residents.

Portland, OR
September 2001
In September, 2001, ILSR held its first Deconstruction Training Conference in Portland, OR, in conjunction with the Used Building Materials Association (UBMA) "Harvesting the Future" Conference. More than 150 practitioners attended the event, which gave community development organizations an opportunity to meet technical assistance providers and professionals in the fields of deconstruction and materials reuse. In addition to offering training workshops, ILSR staff held one-on-one meetings with community development organizations, providing recommendations on topics from business organization to identifying start-up capital, and distributed copies of our deconstruction training manual, hailed as a critical resource for fledgling companies.
